Pediatric Pulp Therapy in Socorro, NM

If your child has a damaged tooth, they are at risk for a painful infection that could cause other problems for their oral health. Our pediatric dentists may suggest pulp therapy to remove infected dental pulp from a primary tooth to preserve your child’s smile. If your child has a toothache, call Tiny Teeth Children’s Dentistry at 575-838-3912 for an appointment with Dr. Stephen M. Cito or Dr. Mike and learn more about pulp therapy in Socorro, New Mexico.

Pulpotomy is an endodontic treatment that is most often used on primary (baby) teeth. When decay or injury reaches the dental pulp, which is the innermost layer of the tooth, patients often experience tooth pain and sensitivity. If not treated, the tooth will likely abscess and eventually require extraction. In order to prevent this, our pediatric dentists may recommend pulpotomy.

During pulpotomy, we remove the decay and the pulp chamber. The area is sterilized, but unlike a regular root canal treatment, the tooth nerves are not removed or treated. In some cases, not all of the dental pulp is removed, thus maintaining the vitality of the remaining healthy pulp. For these situations, we often use a therapeutic dressing to maintain the healthy pulp. After the decayed pulp is removed and the tooth is cleaned, a dental crown is often required. We most often recommend stainless steel crowns for children.

While pulpotomy is rarely recommended for permanent (adult) teeth, this treatment may be suggested if decay has reached the pulp but much of the pulp is still healthy. If the roots of the tooth have not finished forming, a partial pulpotomy can give the tooth a chance to finish forming.

  • First visit for my son who is 2. I was referred by a friend. The girls in the front were friendly they have iPads for the kids to play while waiting and the Dentist was good with baby and surprisingly got a peek at my sons teeth. The "cleaning" was very quick but I know he was wiggling. Over all it was a good first time visit.

  • I've been bringing my son to Dr.cito's office since he was 2. He's 4 now and loves going to the dentist. The front office always greets me with a smile and good morning. And thank goodness they remind me of our appointments. The assistants in the back make him feel special, like his part of the family. They are full of answers for my questions and follow my questions by asking Dr.Cito. I have recommended Dr.Cito to all my family and I would recommend him to anyone with small kids
